A worrisome report was released today indicating that the swine flu virus can cause infection deep in the lungs, much like the flu virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic that killed at least 40 million people. This means it's more likely than typical seasonal flu to cause stubborn cases of pneumonia, which is one of the leading causes of death in flu cases.

It is not difficult tounderstand why, in such a tradition of inquiry, there is a generalneglect of the question of man's moral responsibility of nature. Theecologist, as we well know, conceives of "nature" as a complicatedsystem of interacting parts. Such a concept is hopelessly out ofreach of a methodology which "begins" with "immediate" subjectiveexperience and awareness. Thus the very method of many philosophers their preferred manner of doing their work has kept themuninvolved with questions of environmental ethics. Moreover, byplacing mankind in the center of their theory of knowledge, manyphilosophers have been drawn toward the unwarranted conclusion thathumanity is also in the center of nature. Philosophers haveall too often been thus "bewitched" by their preferred methodologicalpoints of view. The ecological moralist, of course, adopts adifferent perspective by regarding man as a member, rather than themaster or the justification, of the natural community. d "The Fact/Value Gap" We return here to the question ofmoral cognitivism. For centuries, many philosophers have contendedthat no amount of factual information can logically entail anevaluative conclusion. The maxim "no 'ought' from 'is'" or "novalues from facts" is virtually axiomatic among philosophers today. The most troublesome thing about this maxim is that it is probablycorrect strictly speaking.

Those changes yielded unique X ray pulses with the potential to generate extremely high resolution imagery useful for medical, engineering, scientific and security purposes. The teams findings, detailed June 26 in the journal Nature Photonics, should also help inform future experiments involving high intensity lasers. Donald Umstadter and colleagues at the universitys Extreme Light Laboratory fired their Diocles Laser at a beam of electrons to measure how the lasers photons considered both particles and waves of light scattered from a single electron after striking it. Under typical conditions, as when light from a bulb or the sun strikes a surface, that scattering phenomenon makes vision possible. But an electron the negatively charged particle present in matter forming atoms normally scatters just one photon of light at a time. And the average electron rarely enjoys even that privilege, Umstadter said, getting struck only once every four months or so. Though previous laser based experiments had scattered a few photons from the same electron, Umstadters team managed to scatter nearly 1,000 photons at a time. At the ultra high intensities produced by the laser, both the photons and electron behaved much differently than usual. Donald Umstadter When we have this unimaginably bright light, it turns out that the scattering this fundamental thing that makes everything visible fundamentally changes in nature, said Umstadter, the Leland and Dorothy Olson Professor of Physics and Astronomy. A photon from standard light will typically scatter at the same angle and energy it featured before striking the electron, regardless of how bright its light might be. Yet Umstadters team found that, above a certain threshold, the lasers brightness altered the angle, shape and wavelength of that scattered light.
